THERAPY PRIVACY POLICY
Privacy and Confidentiality in Therapy Sessions
The conversations that we have within our therapy sessions are confidential and will be protected as such. Information will be shared outside of our sessions only with your written consent or in the event that a Court Judge demands it. However, the following are instances where I would be obligated by law to break our confidentiality agreement without your permission:
1. If it is assessed during your participation in psychotherapy sessions suspected child abuse or elder abuse is occurring.
2. If during a session, you threaten to kill or harm another individual, and I feel you will act on this threat, or that you may lose control of your actions.
3. If at any time during the course of our sessions, I determine that you are a danger to yourself, I will inform you of that opinion and make every effort to keep you from endangering your life. In some cases this may include notifying the police or family members.
SOCIAL MEDIA PRIVACY POLICY
As new technology develops and the Internet changes, there may be times when I need to update this policy. If I do so, I will notify you in writing of any policy changes and make sure you have a copy of the updated policy.
Friending & Following
I do not accept friend requests from current or former clients on any social networking site personally. I believe that adding clients as friends or contacts on these sites can compromise your confidentiality and our respective privacy. It may also blur the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship. If you have questions about this, contact me and we’ll discuss this.
My professional practice has social media pages to allow me to connect with people and share posts and updates. While you may Like the page, this may compromise your confidentiality and privacy. It’s best if we discuss this first. You may subscribe to the page via RSS without becoming a Fan and without creating a public link to my Page.
Please don’t feel offended if I don’t follow you back. I do not want to compromise your privacy. If you want to share something you posted, please bring it up during our sessions.
Interacting
Please do not use messaging on Social Networking sites, postings, or @ replies to contact me. These sites are not secure and I may not read these messages in a timely fashion. Engaging with me this way could compromise your confidentiality. It may also create the possibility that these exchanges become a part of your legal medical record and will need to be documented and archived in your chart.
Business Review Sites
You may find my therapy practice on sites which list & review businesses. If you should find my listing on any of these sites, please know that my listing is NOT a request for a testimonial, rating, or endorsement from you as my client. Due to confidentiality, I cannot respond to any review from clients on any of these sites. I urge you to take your own privacy as seriously as I take my commitment of confidentiality to you. You should also be aware that if you are using these sites to communicate indirectly with me about your feelings about our work, there is a good possibility that I may never see it.
If we are working together, I hope that you will bring your feelings and reactions to our work directly into the therapy process. This can be an important part of therapy, even if we decide we are not a good fit. If you feel I have done something harmful or unethical and you do not feel comfortable discussing it with me, you can always contact the State licensing board that oversees my professional licensure, and they will review the services I have provided.
Location-Based Services
If you used location-based services on your mobile phone, you may wish to be aware of the privacy issues related to using these services. However, if you have GPS tracking enabled on your device, it is possible that others may surmise that you are a therapy client due to regular check-ins at my office on a weekly basis.
We may use email to arrange or modify appointments. Email is not completely secure or confidential, though I've taken all privacy precautions. You should also know that any emails I receive from you and any responses that I send to you become a part of your legal treatment record.
