Therapy questions and answers

FAQ

  • Q: Does Walk and Talk Therapy work?

A: You can guess the answer to this. YES! There is something to be said for being outside and talking. We use both sides of the brain to process trauma. So let’s move the body side to side and forward. Exercise is shown to reduce stress and depressive symptoms. And, here is some research:

  • Q: Where do walk and talk therapy sessions happen?

A: At a park or location of our mutual choosing

  • Q: What about bad weather?

A: We will discuss a back-up plan before scheduling our first session. The back-up plan can include having an online or phone session. If you prefer to walk outside, I am not bothered by light rain, but it will always be your choice!

  • Q: Is this exercise?

A: You can count in your steps or stretching for the day but not your cardio workout. We are moving but the pace will naturally be slow as we’ll be processing. The place and pace are set by you. I am not a physical therapist or a personal trainer.

  • Q: Confidentiality outdoors?

A: Being in public seems like it should be less private and it may be, compared to a closed office. However, consider how often you’ve been strolling and really paid attention to a stranger’s conversation? Often, your instinct is to give groups distance. It is not obvious that you are with a therapist. If this is a concern for you, we can discuss how to handle possible scenarios.

  • Q: I have physical or neurological conditions but want to move, how do we do this?

I do my best to meet your needs and offer accessible services. I am trained in Adaptive Skiing and work with a multitude of neurological and developmental conditions. If you have a physical adaptation, let’s talk and see what we can do. If for some reason I am unable to meet your needs, we’ll do what we can to help find referrals that may be able to offer the support you need.

  • Can I use health insurance, how do I pay?

A: While I am not currently an in-network provider with insurances, you may check on your out-of-network benefits. For all other compensation questions, please click here for a whole page on money talk.

  • What Can I Expect, What are the Steps?

A: Please see this page for the answers

  • Q: I’ve been doing some research, what kind of therapy do you practice?

A: Check out this page and while I’m not a fan of boxes…I use self-awareness and client-centered practices including EMDR, Gestalt, Mindfulness, inner child and critic, but mostly creating a safe, non-judgmental, caring, trusting relationship with you to heal old wounds and attachments from your past that you may or may not know about and are not working for you now then moving into acceptance of those shadowy bits and see how you can have compassion for them. Sounds like fun, right?

  • Q: I am grieving a profound loss, what do you do then?

A: We go very slowly and very gently. Grief is number one, all the self-awareness work is in service of your mourning and we do not worry about change or transformation. We help you create a new relationship with your beloved and/or to create acceptance with a life change.
